The Committee on Social Theory (CST) was founded in 1989 by Wolfgang Natter, Ted Schatzki and John Paul Jones III to strengthen interdisciplinary links between the social sciences, the humanities and the sciences. Now well into its third decade, CST has three primary activities: graduate education; public lectures, and faculty development. Over 140 students have been awarded the Graduate Certificate in Social Theory which offers systematic training in social theory. The Certificate augments and is pursued concurrently with the student’s regular Masters and PhD program. CST also sponsors a graduate student journal, disClosure: A Journal of Social Theory.
CST hosts internationally acclaimed scholars for lectures and workshops each fall and spring. Recent speakers have included Simon Critchley, Mamood Mamdani, Lori Watson, and Stuart Elden. Finally, we foster intellectual community through team-taught seminars, faculty working papers, and many occasions for informal socializing.
